A Taste Of Childhood ...

When I was a little girl, my Mum had a Kenwood Chef mixer (actually, I say Mum had it, but it could've been Dad's I suppose, as he used to be a baker way back when, and he was always making something or other). That thing was always going, hardly surprising considering there were 7 of us at home, including Mum and Dad.
When they first got the mixer (and I must've been pretty young, because I can't remember a time before KC!), there was a recipe in there for something called Nutty Bars - basically a spongey cake thing that you cut into bars, which had coconut, sultanas and peanuts in it. Well, Nutty Bars was the most made item in our household, we had them very often, and we all loved them.
Time passed, the recipe book disappeared somewhere, and that was the end of Nutty Bars. But they were never forgotten! Finally, a few weeks ago Mum got in touch with Kenwood to see if she could buy another copy of the recipe book. Sadly, the book is no longer available, but Kenwood very kindly sent Mum a copy of the recipe.
Yum yum pig's bum! I made some tonight ... oh God, what memories the smell coming from the oven brought back. And the taste ... I was instantly transported back to those halcyon days of childhood. Suffice to say I've eaten far more than I should have ... but those days of childhood pass so quickly, so can you blame me for trying to capture some of the lost feelings? Very sadly, Colin didn't like them, because of the coconut. What a shame ... guess that means more for me then - how ever will I cope (*snigger*)!
Oh, and it's snowing here. I can't believe it. November and snow. No fair! I don't like the snow, and I'll like it even less tomorrow if the schools are closed and I have to make alternative arrangements for my little monkey men.
PS: Yes, the photo is a bit random ... it's Mum and Dad, probably in late 1968/early 1969 - the pic was taken at Teresa's christening (and that gorgeously cute little angel in the bottom left hand corner is ME!)
