Time Flies By ...

Today is day 10 of my holiday. Well, actually, it's day 9, cos I went to work last Saturday, but still. I took half-term week off to spend time with the kids, and it's just flown past. They both go back to school tomorrow, and it'll be back to work for me too.

I had all these grand plans for getting to the gym every day, trips to the park, the cinema etc, and we've done absolutely none! But still the time seems to have been a whirl of activity - I had friends over for dinner two nights last week, Sean had his friend over all day on Thursday, and so there seems to have been lots of grocery shopping, vacuuming and tidying go on (and lots of cooking). Ethan has been shooting everyone with his gun made from two pieces of train track, and Sean has been mithering me every five minutes to let him bake more cake. Best of all (and I hate to say it) is that Colin was away all last week, working on a project in Liverpool. He doesn't believe me, but the house genuinely stays a lot tidier when he's not here. And it was quiet, we could watch what WE wanted to watch (instead of endless repeats of Mythbusters, Brainiacs, and all the Police chase shows). But it was nice to have him arrive back on Friday night.

You'd think that after a week and a bit at home, I'd be feeling really relaxed and refreshed, wouldn't you ... oh how I wish! I've been having real problems sleeping the last few nights, and I'm absolutely shattered. On Saturday night I had a really horrible nightmare that kept me awake (as in, every time I started to drop off again I remembered it and jumped awake again), and despite being knackered last night I still didn't sleep well. Oh well!

I did wonder if the sleeping problem could be down to the new meds I'm on - the doctor started me on a new statin, which I've been taking for a couple of weeks. Hopefully the sleep will settle down soon. Anyway, I had an appointment at the doctors this morning to get the results of my diabetes monitoring blood tests that I had done last Monday. I really didn't expect the results to be good, bearing in mind that my usual level of control is ... erm, how shall I put it ... non-existent. However, I have been making a concerted effort over the last few weeks to get myself back on track, and I must be doing something right, cos my HbA1C was 7.6, down from 7.9 in January. The HbA1C test basically gives an average of my blood sugar readings over the last three months, and the general consensus is that for a diabetic it should be no higher than 7.5 (and preferably lower than 7). So for me to be just marginally above the recommended level is great! My cholesterol level was just 3.9, which was also really good, and all my other bloods were normal. Wahey! That's a really good start to my week - lets hope I can keep it up!

So, back to work tomorrow ... I hear that our whizzy new computer system has been causing all sorts of problems, and Si, the Consultant I work with, has been tearing her hair out. Because of all the problems it sounds like my colleague hasn't had time to do any of my typing, so I will no doubt have piles of work to greet me tomorrow morning - but I like a challenge, so it doesn't matter! The next few weeks are going to be hectic, as we have a big inspection coming up and there is lots of extra work to do to prepare for it. Ah, I really do love a challenge!

I am trying to motivate myself to head off to the kitchen now, to do a bit of tidying, stack the dishwasher and make a start on making a banoffee pie for pudding. Yum!
