Ich Sprechen Gut Deutsch!
Or not, as the case may be.
I am sitting in the 'winter garden' (conservatory) at Robert and Andrea's in Germany on a warm afternoon with blue skies (who would think we're halfway through October?!). We arrived here early yesterday afternoon for more partying and champagne. Today is Andrea's 50th birthday, and last night we partied until the early hours. I drank more champagne than I care to remember, but I had a good time. I got the chance to practice my limited German with some of Andrea's friends - my German is very limited, but not quite as limited as it was six weeks ago when we were here last (when I had a vocabulary of about six words). Thankfully I seemed to make a good impression with my linguistic skills, even if I still couldn't understand 95% of the conversation at any given time! But it just makes me more determined to stick with it and be able to converse even more next time. German certainly isn't the easiest language to learn, but it felt good last night to practice what few phrases I do have.
Tonight we party again ... more champagne, more food, more lack of sleep! It's a hard life, innit!

Don't worry about the understanding, if people are not speaking to you they likely speak dialect and even people that are from up north can have some trouble then. When they speak to you they are likely to slow down and speak (more) Hochdeutsch (than dialect). There is a TV ad that says the Baden-Württembergers can do anything, but speak Hochdeutsch. There is something to that!
